I recently read "Building a Vector Space Search Engine in Perl" (yes, I am behind on my bookmarks). This coincides perfectly with this article: "The Fight Against Spam, Part 2", scratching ever so slightly below the surface of Apples Mail.app junk-mail filtering.
To avoid spam many websites make you fill out a CAPTCHA, or log in via an account at a corporation such as Twitter, Facebook, Google or even Microsoft GitHub.
I have chosen to use a more old school method of spam prevention.
