About a month ago it was suggested that it would be cool if olduse.net - the interactive art installation by Joey Hess that posted an archive of usenet 30 years delayed from 2011 to 2021 - started over, so it could be followed again.

A bit like the Calvin and Hobbes comics are perpetually rotating online, one strip per day.

That sounded fun, so here it is: olduse.net: Extended replay - you can now follow the old usenet archive delayed 40, 41, or 42 years, over nntp of course.

How to in excruciating detail…

To avoid spam many websites make you fill out a CAPTCHA, or log in via an account at a corporation such as Twitter, Facebook, Google or even Microsoft GitHub.

I have chosen to use a more old school method of spam prevention.

  • Configure a newsreader¹ to connect to the server koldfront.dk on port 1119 using nntps (nntp over TLS).
  • Open the newsgroup called lantern.koldfront and post a follow up to the article.
