No Needle, No Wear #music

If your trusty Mark II is getting old, how about an ELP Laser Turntable?

Dog-ugly and not that much scratch-action, but still...

Oh, look, particle physicists dabble in the field as well!

"Using methods derived from our work on instrumentation for high energy physics we have investigated the problem of audio reconstruction from mechanical recordings. The idea was to read the recorded grooves with no, or minimal, contact and then apply image analysis methods to recover the audio data and reduce noise. This work has been described in a paper which has been published in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (J. Audio Eng. Soc., vol. 51, no. 12, pp.1172-1185 (2003 Dec.). A number of sound clips, identified below, present comparisons of these methods with standard playback methods."
