Because it's common practice for open mailing lists, where a lot of senders aren't necessarily subscribed to the list, but would still like direct responses to their mails. lkml comes to mind as an example of this.

To avoid spam many websites make you fill out a CAPTCHA, or log in via an account at a corporation such as Twitter, Facebook, Google or even Microsoft GitHub.
I have chosen to use a more old school method of spam prevention.
