Tiling window managers #ui

A couple of days ago a colleague was reading something on his iPhone. I looked at it, and the tiny tiny letters were illegible to me. I asked him if he really could read the text, and he started reading it aloud. I couldn't make out the letters, even after focusing.

That has never happened to me before.

I have noticed that focusing has become less easy, but this is the first time I actually couldn't read something tiny. Must be part of growing old.

Xmonad logo For a long time I have wanted to try Xmonad. The idea of a keyboard-driven window manager seems to make sense, and automatically using all the screen real estate on this 30" monitor also seems like it would be a good idea.

So I printed out an overview of Xmonads default key bindings and typed xmonad --replace in an xterm.

It took me all of 10 seconds to realize, it is not for me.

I am too set in my ways - I want my browser-window just there (with a coloured tail of all the logs on my server behind it), I want my editor window just there, I want my instant messaging windows just there, there, and there.

In those 10 seconds I realized that I am too old to want to spend the energy it would take to examine if I could make it work for me.

So, yeah. Growing old.
