Why do people put "www." in front of their email? Is it because they don't know the difference between email and the web, or what?!

I tried to be hip and hi-tech last night and order a book via the net. You would think that books was an obvious thing to sell, one of the things you would think of as "e-business" first, and therefore the online bookstores would be pretty good at it?! Well, think again. (Long story, screenshots later. Perhaps).
